Abstract	The "National and European Rectors' Symposium on the SOCRATES Programme and the Institutional Contract", was held from 25th - 28th April, 1996 at the Orthodox Academy of Crete, Greece. The purpose of the symposium was to bring together rectors and vice-rectors of Greek universities with rectors and other leading individuals from other European Community countries, thus providing an international forum for a report on, and a discussion of the importance, objectives, strategies, difficulties, and implementation of the European Communities' SOCRATES programme, within the framework of European strategy on university education. In particular, the participants discussed the delicate matter of the "Institutional Contract" and also exchanged views on matters such as: student mobility, staff mobility, development of university curricula at initial, intermediate and advanced levels, the European Credit Transfer System (ECTS) and the development of integrated language courses. The Universities' European Strategies and tertiary education after the year 2000 were a theme of particular interest to the participants. The single contributions are documented separately.
