Abstract | The article is divided into four parts. The first presents a recapitulation and summary of the more or less known facts concerning the nature of changes which have occurred in our countries during the past five to six years in the social and economic area, and how the population perceived such changes. The substantial finding of the second part is that the economic value of education in Central European countries is increasing and at present is at least on a par with the developed OECD countries. The third part is devoted to the basic quantitative and structural trends in the development of education systems in the countries of Central Europe and to where the development has led. The fourth and concluding part of the article focuses primarily on the interrelationships and links between financing of education and its quantitative tendencies within the context of overall social and economic changes. The tendencies were in a certain way conflicting and even contradictory, and at the beginning of the 1990s in particular generated a certain social tension, the consequences of which are still being felt.
