Abstract | In this article we examine relevant research relating to textbook development and provision. The political significance of the textbook in the definition and legitimation of knowledge heightens the significance of this issue. The analysis presented here draws upon the professional experience (practical and academic) of the authors in textbook development in contexts ranging from Africa and the Caribbean to Pakistan and Papua New Guinea. More specifically the latter country provides a detailed case study. Our primary objective is to provide a concise and critical introduction into the literature relating to textbook processes, adding an analytical framework that draws attention to the strengths and limitations of four basic approaches of textbook provision in developing countries. (These are): 1) adoption of existing textbooks, 2) adaptation or revision of textbooks to make them more appropriate to the own cultural context, 3) publishing within Ministries of Education, 4) local publishing in collaboration with external agencies.
