| Abstract | "This paper reports the results of a research project aimed at overcoming some of the problems of international comparisons of data. We focus in particular on Canada and Britain, and examine the following questions: How do these countries differ in the amount of education they provide for their workforces? To which groups and in what form is formal education provided? At what stage of the life cycle is it delivered? We answer these questions by investigating the educational attainment of the two labour forces and the current educational enrolment of the two adult populations. " The data are from nationally representative random-sample surveys: the 1989 General Social Survey in Canada and the 1989 Labour Force Survey in Britain. Results and comparisons are presented about following topics: 1) educational attainment by age group and gender, 2) apprenticeships, 3) occupational distribution of educational qualifications. Generally, the results demonstrate "that the Canadian educational system has been more successful in generating a higher level of educational achievement than the UK system". Some detailed findings about women's attainment, qualifications between occupational categories, and flexibility of the school- to-work transition are discussed additionally.
