AbstractA survey explored the various band method books available for use with public school beginning band programs. The selection of a beginning band method has an affect on the curriculum and future musical growth and development of public school music education students. The first section surveys band methods for the concepts they cover, the choice of music they use to deliver those concepts, and the special resources and media offered in the series to assist the band director in the development of the students' band education. Beginning band methods are generally not created with a specific grade level in mind. As a result, band directors are required to become familiar with the curricular content and methodology presented in each band method. The second section discusses band supplements available for band directors to further develop the techniques and skills of their students. These supplements are surveyed based upon the organization of the text. For example, if a series is divided over 12 units, the concepts, music, and activities are discussed for each unit on an individual basis. If the supplement is a series of concert pieces available for purchase, the melodies and arrangements of the song series are discussed. The conclusion is the summary of the results found in the survey of the beginning band methods. It serves as a review and discussion of the materials listed in the survey. (Contains 2 graphs summarizing the survey and 14 references.) (BT)
