Abstract	The most critical variable for school success is the leadership behavior of the school principal. However, the principal's role is becoming increasingly complex. This book offers suggestions for the beginning principal. Each chapter is geared to help new principals develop personal plans for professional development and improvement. Following the introduction, chapter 2 outlines the book's conceptual framework, and chapter 3 discusses the value of developing a clear statement of professional values. The fourth chapter identifies the challenges and demands associated with "being the boss." Chapters 5 through 10 offer advice for assessing one's personal leadership, meeting the expectations for technical and managerial skills, building a personal timeline for professional development, meeting others' expectations, reading the school culture, and developing personal support networks.
