AbstractTechnology is making it easier for people with disabilities to function independently in their homes, workplaces, schools, and communities. Things that were once thought impossible are now possible with the aid of new tools available to assist in the transition toward independent living. None have had as big an impact as the iPod Touch. When most people think of an iPod, they think of it as a portable music player. The truth is that it is actually an amazingly powerful assistive technology tool that allows the learner to take instruction out into the community. Using the iPod, one can: (1) Plan one's day; (2) Follow directions; (3) Use public transportation; (4) Go to school, work, shopping, etc.; (5) Perform work activities; (6) Create a shopping list; (7) Go to a restaurant; (8) Handle difficult social situations; and (9) Much, much more! The possibilities with the iPod are endless. With the right content, one can use the video and audio abilities of the iPod Touch to teach freedom and independence in new ways, and--most importantly--give learners the motivation they need to learn.
