Abstract | Four community colleges in Western Massachusetts--Berkshire Community College (BCC), Greenfield Community College (GCC), Holyoke Community College (HCC), and Springfield Technical Community College (STCC)--have created a collaborative Web site, at www.healthprograms.org, to present information on allied health associate degrees or certificate programs, in one location. With the new Web site, a prospective student can now locate the education he or she needs, and college staff will become more knowledgeable in advising students on what is available. The new Web site contains not only a complete list of regional academic programs in health, with links to more information about the course of study and contacts at the various colleges; there are also pages to guide students in exploring the various careers, tips on transferring to a four-year college or university to complete a bachelor's degree, a list of national agencies representing health fields, information on selecting a college and obtaining financial aid, and even a link to the Bureau of Labor Statistics Occupational Handbook for additional data on the careers. One of the most useful pages on the Web site (especially for graduates, although many of them are recruited by employers even before graduation) is the job search page with links to the employment opportunities sections of medical facilities Web sites. The site also connects users to employment pages of regional newspapers and masslive.com (a Web site affiliated with "The Republican," a Western Massachusetts newspaper). (ERIC). |
