| Abstract | Seventy-five years ago, Franklin D. Roosevelt took two crises--a decayed environment and wide unemployment--and combined them to form a single success: the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC). In the CCC three million young unemployed men dramatically improved the nation's infrastructure. The CCC gave young Americans living in poverty hope. This article discusses how today's Corps give young men and women the chance to change their communities and their own lives. For youth who are disconnected--from nature, from themselves, from the sort of path that might offer fulfillment--reengaging in a Corps offers a gamut of opportunities. Some young people who have had trouble in traditional academic settings discover a new way of learning. Some find a reality free from the constant buzz of modern technology. Others learn that they possess the power and ability to nurture a natural environment that desperately needs a rising generation of stewards. Corps offer a holistic approach for young people, and for so many Corpsmembers, building a connection with the outdoors has long-term effects on academic success and physical and mental health.
