Abstract | When he looks back to the 1960s, the author feels sentimental about the New Social Studies movement that began very strong and then suddenly disintegrated. At the time of the genesis of the movement, there was a group of professionals, representing both the social sciences and education, who felt they had a vision of what was needed to revitalize and reform the social studies. In simple terms, they hoped to make learning social studies exciting and to help create citizens who could think for themselves and make sound decisions. In this article, the author highlights the successes and failures of the movement, enumerates the reasons why the movement came to an abrupt end, and shares the lessons learned from the history of the movement. [This article was originally published in the May/June 1992 issue of "The Social Studies."] (ERIC). |
