AbstractAs the economy sinks, dwindling state appropriations and plunging endowment values are forcing colleges to make significant budget cuts. Professors--from the tenured to the adjunct--are beginning to see teaching-load increases and travel restrictions, along with salary cuts and layoffs. At institutions taking austerity measures, those measures are taking their toll on morale. Few faculty members say mass despair has settled in, yet many feel that heavier workloads, curtailed research opportunities, and vanished colleagues have changed their jobs for the worse. Travel restrictions are among the most widespread of cost-cutting measures that faculty members say are eating into their wallets. Many, especially those doing research in the field, seeking jobs, or trying to establish themselves in their disciplines, see travel as a fundamental part of doing business. Met with departments restricting or altogether eliminating travel budgets, some professors have decided to use their own cash. Though the brunt of outright layoffs has largely fallen on adjunct professors, that is little consolation for professors at colleges where those layoffs occur. At some institutions, positions left vacant by retirements have been left unfilled, and at schools seeking to eliminate entire programs rather than shave off small parts of many, there is a sense of arbitrariness in the process that has professors distracted and worried.
