Abstract | Chinese and American exchanges introduced a Westchester County school district to a different culture and sharpened their view of their own educational experience. Through the forward thinking of Andy Spano, the county executive, and Daisy Yau, the director of Asian-American affairs and business development for the county, Westchester County had begun to forge business relationships with China. Croton-Harmon School District sent a delegation of four teachers, a high school principal, a superintendent, and, from a neighboring district, a teacher of English as a second language, to China to build relationships with Chinese educators. During this visit to China, friendships grew, and invitations were extended for Chinese delegations to visit the Croton school district. This led to groups from Shanghai and Beijing visiting the U.S. during the next school year. In this article, the author discusses the Croton delegation's trip to China and its impact on the school district and the community. (ERIC). |
