| Abstract | After providing a brief background on emergent literacy, the author describes interactive storybooks-software programs that allow children to interact with stories in a variety of ways. Children can listen to a story being read, following the words on the screen or in a book, and also activate animations of characters or other objects on the screen. The author focuses on authoring software that allows families and teachers to create interactive storybooks, including text that is personally meaningful for a child, read by a parent or teacher, and illustrated with photos of a child's family, pets, friends, or favorite places. Such individualized stories capture toddlers' interest. (Author). |
