Abstract | Over the past few years, South Side High School, in Rockville Centre, New York, has attempted to increase enrollment in its International Baccalaureate program while maintaining the program's high academic standards. A multiyear detracking effort helped more students prepare for the rigors of IB. Counseling sessions, safety nets, and ensuring that classes included multiple students of different ethnicities encouraged increased enrollment among minority students and others who hadn't considered IB in the past. Despite dramatic increases in enrollment, IB scores at the school have remained stable, and even increased among high achievers. (Contains 1 figure.) (Author). |
