Abstract	Many adolescents who were born in the late 1970s and 1980s in Russia became juvenile criminals due to the change in the social structure, the proclamation of the values of the comfortable way of life, the institution of property ownership and so forth. Many young people have to help relatives who are in need, and this as well often causes them to engage in unlawful actions. In the framework of the "promote criminal reform" movement, in October 2000, a number of training colonies and correctional institutions held a competition of essays with the theme of inmates' lives, to be studied by psychologists, sociologists, educators, and legal experts. The present article offers a number of the findings of a statistical and content analysis of 240 essays. A more detailed study was made of essays written by 121 inmates of the colonies at Shakhovskii and Perm. The average age of these youngsters was 17.6. The majority (about 70 percent) already had one conviction, most often a criminal conviction, indicating that their criminally punishable acts had been deliberate and not accidental. As the essays were written by people barely out of childhood, with a common theme of despair and pain due to separation from family, the authors examined primarily the characteristics of their parental homes.
