Abstract | In K-6 teacher education programs, a host of content methods classes make up a large portion of the preservice teacher's course load. One of those is the social studies methods course. The course helps students develop pedagogical understanding in the social studies. However, as most engaged in methods course instruction can attest, preservice teachers have a rather negative view of the social studies, particularly of history. This article describes a 15-week course designed by the author to help preservice teachers make sense of their earlier experience with and observations of social studies teaching, wrestle with the idea that school history content is more like heritage and therefore a story of national pride, and expose them to alternative American history topics that they have a chance of encountering in the elementary classroom.
