Abstract | Third wave student development theory looks across and between populations for constructs with shared meanings that may present new possibilities for understanding student development. Despite commonalities of experience, multiracial and international students are two populations typically studied independently. In this conceptual article, we apply the construct of liminality from anthropology to analyze the shared experiences of these two groups, arguing for the adoption of liminality as a third wave conceptual framework.
