AbstractAugmented reality (AR) is predicted to be one of the driving forces in education over the next five years. However, the success of this technology depends on the intelligent design of the apps. This research investigated commercially available augmented reality picture books to survey their digital features interactive features. The researchers also used the Purposes for Illustrations developed by Tunnell, Jacobs, Young, & Bryan (2016) to investigate how the AR supported storytelling. Finally, the researchers noted the challenges and issues they encountered in the AR apps. This research found that the books largely replicate the digital features which were available in previous e-books with the addition of 3D AR graphics. Most of the AR graphics simply duplicate the graphics found in the books with a few showing creativity and innovation. Finally, researchers encountered several problems with the technology such as issues with the design of the AR and issues with the apps. As this technology moves forward, it will be important that designers are mindful of creating that moves beyond the initial excitement of viewing the AR to one which invites the readers back to re-read the book.
