AbstractThe authors have had numerous opportunities to work with elementary teachers and students, but few of those experiences have been as rewarding as the We Are Wyoming project. During the 2014-2015 school year, they traveled to thirty-six fourth-grade classrooms all over the state teaching the We Are Wyoming project. The unit was a two-day integrated history, geography, literacy, and art unit that aligned with Wyoming standards for literacy, social studies, and the visual arts. In Wyoming, as is true in many other states, the social studies curriculum for fourth grade revolves around state history and state geography. The authors designed the unit to engage students in thinking critically and creatively about the history and geography of both the state and their local areas while also incorporating experiences for students to demonstrate their learning through the production of visual art in multiple media. This article will explore the goals and objectives for three of the activities from the We Are Wyoming project as well as share examples of student artwork from some of the classrooms in which the authors taught the unit.
