AbstractWell-managed schools are characterised by the presence of properly selected and dedicated educators. The authors argue that the uncontrolled involvement of unions in the selection and promotion of teachers may lead to the infringement of educators' rights and poor performance during the execution of their duties. Findings in the study reveal that teacher unions often ignore their observer role during the selection process and become active participants. This leads to key union members being unjustly promoted, despite legislation on approved guidelines. Uncontrolled union involvement during the filling of promotional posts may lead to anarchy and the exodus of dedicated educators. Recorded focus-group interviews were conducted and transcribed data were analysed by means of the constant comparative method. Recommendations focus on the facilitation of sound involvement of unions in selection procedures. (As Provided).
