Abstract | The author describes the Link Crew transition program that she implemented in 2012 as assistant principal for curriculum and guidance at Villa Park High School in California. She states that administrative and counseling teams at her school had noticed that ninth-grade students struggled in their transitions to high school, with over half of the freshman students receiving one or more F grades for the first semester, and by the end of their first year in high school, 30% of the students had a deficit of at least 10 credits. The Link Crew leaders, juniors and seniors who were selected through an application and interview process, participated in activities to support each ninth-grade student. In one year, her school had a 5% reduction in the number of freshman who had a deficit of 10 or more credits at the end of the year. Additionally, the juniors and seniors who became Link leaders benefited from the expanded leadership opportunities and leadership training that was provided. (ERIC). |
