Abstract | The saxophone section of a wind ensemble can easily be one of the most frustrating to work with when it comes to producing a clear, characteristic tone. Sometimes, the road to an improved sound can be a long path of daily diligence and practice; however, there are many quicker solutions that will drastically improve a student's tone. This article offers ten techniques to troubleshoot one's saxophone section. They include: (1) Adjust the neck strap; (2) Rotate reeds and store them properly; (3) Select the right reed; (4) Invest in a good mouthpiece; (5) Use a mouthpiece patch; (6) Check the ligature; (7) Play overtones; (8) Warm up; (9) Listen; and (10) Maintain the instrument, daily and yearly.
