AbstractDistricts around the country have been forced to reduce personnel and programs because sufficient funds are unavailable to maintain what are commonly referred to in education as "level service budgets." Perhaps it is time for school business officials (SBOs) to engage in serious conversations about whether K-12 public schools should place greater emphasis on raising alternative sources of revenue as a way to fund core operational programs and services, as many private and higher education institutions have been forced to do. SBOs complete specialized business management and entrepreneurial course work en route to their central-office roles. In many districts, then, the only administrator or policy maker at the table who understands revenue growth and fiscal management is the school business manager. In today's globally competitive education marketplace, the scope of the business manager's role should be expanded to include the pursuit of nontraditional revenue sources. The business manager is the most qualified professional in the school district for that task, and public school leaders and policy makers should do their part to encourage, rather than discourage, this expansion of the school business manager's role.
