AbstractThis study takes a look at the many effects having an incarcerated household member has on students during the school day. In order to gain a better understanding of these effects, twelve middle school teachers were interviewed about their experiences with these students. According to the teachers interviewed the study found the following. Students often have lower academic performance, more behavior problems, and parents who are simply overwhelmed by their situation. Teachers stated they have not had enough training provided to help them support their students in this situation. Additionally, they felt the school counselors are overwhelmed and there are not enough mental health supports for students in the building. Based on these findings I concluded that teachers would like to see more training to teach them how to deal with student trauma, more mental health professionals in the school building, more extracurricular activities that provide the opportunity for mentorship, and a list of community resources that they can share with families who might need extra help.
