AbstractThis dissertation encompasses a mostly quantitative cross-sectional survey design with some qualitative elements and delves into educational self-determination, particularly at the elementary level. When reviewing available research regarding self-determination, the researcher noticed that a gap exists. The main focus of studies investigating teachers' perceptions related to the self-determination of students with special needs has leaned toward high school teachers preparing their students for transition to adulthood. This is problematic because understanding teachers' perceptions at the elementary level is crucial to ensuring a stable foundation of self-determination skills in students with special needs, which eventually leads to their ability to transition out of high school successfully. The main research question of this study sought to highlight elementary-level general education teachers' self-perspectives on each of the seven domains of self-determination. The four research sub-questions sought knowledge about how each domain is currently addressed in elementary-level inclusive classrooms, determine whether or not elementary-level general education teachers' self-perspectives of self-determination differ based on years of experience teaching inclusively or current grade level taught, and identify barriers that may be hindering self-determination instruction in elementary-level inclusive classrooms. Upon the completion of a pilot group, an adapted online survey instrument was used to collect and report data about the sub-questions. Two of the sub-questions were analyzed with hand analysis techniques, while the other two utilized the SPSS software program. SPSS was used for analyzing demographic statistics and the results of analysis of variance tests. [The dissertation citations contained here are published with the permission of ProQuest LLC.
