AbstractThe National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) maintains a prominent role in the athletic tradition of this country, yet researchers agree that some of its member institutions have exhibited bias with respect to race and gender. With respect to Black males in the football bowl subdivision (FBS), the head coach to player ratio is disproportionate, especially when compared to their White counterparts. The specific problem is, little is known about how Black coaches persist in the pursuit of careers in the NCAA, FBS with limited access to lead positions. The purpose of this qualitative, case study is to explore the perspectives of aspiring Black football coaches regarding underrepresentation, discrimination, stereotyping, and limited access to head coaching positions in the NCAA, FBS and how they persist in the pursuit of careers in light of these factors. The sample will consist of four assistant coaches who self-identify as Black or African American and are employed with an FBS institution. To focus on answering research questions and obtaining the goal of the study, interviews have been chosen as the primary research instrument. By phone, participants will be initially probed to confirm they meet the criteria to participate in the study. Data will be collected by conducting In-depth interviews with all four participants. These interviews will be conducted via telephone or by using real time face to face applications like Skype RTM or FacetimeRTM.
