Abstract | Creation of high quality online courses, required for successful learning outcomes, can be a challenge to non-traditional online course designers, such as secondary school teachers. Increasing interest in online classes prompted secondary school teachers to design their course. A poorly designed online course can cause students to lose interest and affect whether or not they graduate from secondary school. This Delphi study investigated a number of best practices that help secondary school teachers to become proficient in designing online courses. In this Delphi study, Round 1 consisted of 19 statements which were divided over three sections, namely critical issues, barriers/challenges, and components. This was sent to 32 panelists. Twenty-five of them completed this round. Twenty-four panelists completed Round 2 and 20 completed the final and third round. The final instrument had 34 statements. The expert panel focused on issues specifically to deal with the challenges of moving a course from the face-to-face course room to the online environment. Consensus from the panel provided best practices for secondary school teachers as they designed their online course. These were divided into required and recommended best practices. They will help to keep the learner engaged in the lesson content. Engagement will lead to a pleasant and successful online experience. Having expertise in the process of designing an online course can also help secondary school teachers to fill the demand for online courses.
