AbstractMentoring first-year superintendents in Missouri began as an informal process with the pairing of a veteran superintendent (mentor) with a first-year superintendent (protege) by the Missouri Association of School Administrators (MASA). The adoption of the Career Continuous Professional Certification by the Missouri State Board of Education (October 2005) required that the program take on a more formalized structure. The purpose of this study was to collect and analyze data concerning mentoring programs for first-year superintendent of schools. The study surveyed superintendents who participated in the mentoring program as a first-year superintendent in Missouri during the past three school years (2009-2010, 2010-2011, and 2011-2012). School leaders who served as mentors to the first-year superintendents were also surveyed. A third group, the administrators of mentoring programs for first-year superintendents in other states were surveyed by telephone, to gather data about programs across the United States. Survey topics included: mentor/protege matching process, mentor/protege relationship, mentor training, and Missouri Superintendent Standards. A Likert-type scale with five response choices (strongly agree, agree, neutral, disagree, and strongly disagree was used in the web-based survey instrument. A study of the Mentoring Program for first-year superintendents in Missouri found that superintendents who participated in the study perceived their experience in the MASA program as benefiting their professional growth. Superintendents participating in the study of the mentoring program responded in agreement to statements concerning the matching process and the mentor/protege relationship. Recommendations included additional information being provided during the orientation and recruitment period that would add to participants' ability to communicate and address concerns early in the mentoring process.
