AbstractAfrican Americans hold 6% of all presidential positions, 9% of all administrative positions, and 5.6% of all full time faculty positions in institutions of higher learning throughout the United States. They continue to be underrepresented in leadership positions in higher education. Researchers suggest that mentoring can improve the retention and promotions of underrepresented minorities in higher education. The purpose of this qualitative phenomenological study was to explore the lived experiences of African Americans in senior level administrative positions in higher education to determine the influence mentorship has on their acquisition of positions of leadership. A purposive sample of eight African American administrative leaders participated in this qualitative research study. The findings from this study imply that African Americans need to be mentored to increase confidence, visibility, and psychosocial and career support, thereby increase the number of African Americans available to be promoted. The findings also suggest that the race of the mentor is not as important as the mentor's influence and reputation. The results of this study could encourage educators to seek out mentors (both inside and outside higher education) to assist with career development and career advancement.
