Abstract | This book addresses the "warrior" who rises to the challenge of teaching the adult learner. The discussion is designed as a catalyst for dialogue about the adult learner and to uncover the complexities of teaching this rare and riveting species. This book is organized around three interlocking themes: some things we know about the adult learner; some things we know about change; and some things we know about professional development. In the process of reading the book, the reader gets a glimpse into the research that supports the theory of the adult learner, into the principles that guide the learning practices of the adult learner, and into the strategies that "work in the work setting" for the adult learner. Following the acknowledgements, preface and an introduction, this book divides into four parts. Part I, Some Things We Know About Adult Learners, presents: (1) Telltale Comments; (2) Things We Know; (3) Adult Learning: The Research Base; (4) Five Assumptions About Adult Learners; (5) Supporting Assumptions About Adult Learns; (6) Krupp's Work on Adult Learners; and (7) Thirty Things We Know for Sure. Part II, Some Things We Know About Change, continues with: (8) This Horse Is Not Dead; (9) The Change Game; (10) Who Moved My Cheese?; (11) Group Process-Roles People Play; and (12) The Three-Tiered Change Process. Part III, Some Things We Know About Professional Development, continues with: (13) Evolution of Professional Development Models; (14) Learning Organizations; (15) Best Practices in Professional Development; and (16) The Training Model. Part IV, Conclusion, concludes with: (17) Concerns Based Adoption Model; and (18) Situational Dispositions for Transfer. An appendix comprises a discussion of statements in Figure 1.1. The book also includes a bibliography. (ERIC). |
