AbstractThis book helps theater teaching artists develop connections between their pedagogical and artistic selves. The book presents a framework for thinking about the work of teaching artists in general and theater teaching artists in particular. Through descriptive examinations of practice, the book also provides theater teaching artists and those who prepare and work beside them with concrete examples of three theater-education projects in three different educational settings as well as the collaborative processes that helped them succeed. Replicable in other settings--such as community outreach programs, after school and summer programs hosted by professional theaters, and not-for-profit educational theaters-- these projects provide a jumping-off point for others who work to create interesting theater curriculum. In any educational setting, theater teaching artists create spaces where teachers and students can envision a new, different, and exciting way of learning and doing that they can apply to theater education and many other content areas. With emphasis on linking personal artistry with pedagogical artistry and examples drawn from the author's own practice, this book is an invaluable resource for teaching artists and the arts-education community. Following a foreword by Maxine Greene, this book contains seven sections, as follows: (1) A Look at the Historical and the Personal; (2) Building a Framework for Teaching; (3) Applying the Framework to My Practice; (4) In the Year of the Immigrant: Theatre-Teaching Artists in an Elementary School; (5) Play Ball: Theatre-Teaching Artists in a Professional Theatre for Young Audiences; (6) Boundless: Theatre-Teaching Artists in Community; and (7) Looking Toward the Future. Appendices include: Key Exercises for Teaching; Tools for Assessment and Evaluation; In the Year of the Immigrant Selections; and Boundless: A Musical Across Borders. Concluding this book are a bibliography, list of resources, and an index. (ERIC).
