AbstractThe AEL Measure of Academic Supportiveness and Climate (AEL MASC) was developed as part of the MAACK Pilot Schools project currently underway at AEL. MAACK stands for Maximizing Achievement for African American Children in Kanawha. The AEL MASC was designed to determine students' perceptions about themselves as students and about their school experiences. The survey also examines students' perceptions of their families' awareness of and involvement in their children's school lives. All of these factors are strongly related to student performance; if students do not feel they have a supportive school environment as well as family support, they are less likely to perform well in school. Finally, the survey is designed to facilitate comparisons among the perceptions of groups of students according to their gender or ethnicity.
