AbstractThis monograph examines issues associated with the problems of children and youth with disabilities in the justice system. Following an introductory chapter, chapter 2 focuses on prevention, including systemic prevention strategies, challenges to successful prevention, model programs that address prevention, and recommended prevention practices. Chapter 3 considers the educational services for youth in juvenile correctional facilities including academic programs, special education services, challenges to delivering special education in correctional facilities, and recommended special education practices. The importance of transition planning when youths transfer into and out of either short-term or long-term correctional facilities is stressed in the following chapter, which also provides recommended transition practices. Finally, chapter 5 discusses the importance of family involvement and advocacy, including families' perceptions of the justice system, families' perceptions of professionals, and recommended advocacy practices.
