Abstract | Aligned with its 1998 standards for first and second language learning, Alberta Learning has published lesson plans that aim for a closer relationship between learning and evaluation. Each volume in this series presents a specific task for students that involves planning, carrying out and evaluating their work. The task for seventh grade students who are native speakers of French is to read and respond to three articles on the subject of violence among today's youth. The guidebook has four parts: a Teacher's Guide, a Student Notebook, Examples of Student Work, and Pedagogic Notes. The Teacher's Guide introduces the objectives for the project in terms of the reading process and the content of the lesson, specific guidelines for introducing and directing the project, and grading criteria. The Student Notebook includes directions for the project, the articles to be read, and questions for comprehension and reflection. The third section presents examples of students' notes and answers to the questions followed by an evaluation of their responses. Finally, the Pedagogic Notes include goals and principles for the teacher to keep in mind throughout the project, notes on the levels of linguistic production and sophistication of ideas that students should achieve at the intended grade level, and an analysis of the thinking and writing process from the Examples of Student Work.
