AbstractStudents who are homeschooled face special challenges when assembling their college-admissions portfolio. This booklet shows parents and students how to write a successful portfolio. It emphasizes the kinds of documents that will be needed and offers tips on documenting the learning process and how to begin and maintain an academic journal. It details ways to compile the data in the journal, listing examples of how to organize the information into a sensible document, and explores the purposes of keeping the journal even for students who do not plan to attend college or a specialized training program. Once the information is assembled, it discusses what to put in the final document, depending on whether the student is applying for college or is pursuing a job. These sections emphasize the importance of recognizing and writing for the potential readers of the portfolio and how students can describe their skills with a punch. A special section in the text looks at common concerns and questions that parents and students have when assembling a portfolio. These include What about high school diplomas? and What about ACT and SAT tests? Five appendices feature further information on admissions query letters, the admissions essay, sample attachments to the portfolio, and other information. (RJM)
