AbstractA study was undertaken at Miami-Dade Community College (MDCC) to examine 4- and 5-year success rates for students who needed and completed college preparatory instruction (CPI) and compare them to rates for students not requiring such instruction. Students were deemed successful if they graduated or achieved a grade point average (GPA) of 2.00 or better whether or not they continued enrollment. The results of the study, based on 1994 outcomes for 8,874 first-time-in-college students from fall 1989 and 9,194 from fall 1990, included the following: (1) college-wide, success rates for all students who needed remediation were between 55% and 58%; (2) students from 1989 who needed and completed CPI achieved a success rate of 79%, while this group from the 1990 cohort achieved a 77% success rate; (3) students from the two cohorts who did not need CPI achieved success rates of 82 to 84%; (4) 1989 students needing and completing CPI in only one area showed a 5-year success rate of 81%, with 28% of students graduated and 24% still enrolled; (5) 1989 students needing and completing CPI in all three areas showed a success rate of 74% after five years, with 40% still enrolled and 9% graduated; (6) for 1989 students not completing CPI, the 5-year success rate was 44% for students deficient in one area and 33% for those deficient in all three; and (7) for both cohorts, 63% of students deficient in only one area completed CPI, compared to 24% of those deficient in all three areas.
