Abstract | The intent of this book is to provide the framework for educational experiences designed to develop creativity, self-reliance, and a sense of independence in the students' approach to learning. It is comprised of eight units on a variety of themes. Each unit stresses the use of thinking processes, such as creativity and problem solving. Emphasis is placed upon student self-direction. The book presents a curriculum used and evaluated with students in grades four through six. This curriculum could also be adapted for use with secondary students, as the thinking processes are the same. Chapter 1, entitled "Thinking and Feeling," includes activities on the topics of Bloom's Taxonomy, critical thinking, creativity, visualization, creative problem solving, and goal setting. Chapter 2,"Healthy Body-Healthy Mind," involves activities on nutrition and stress. Chapter 3, "Scientists Explore Unexplained Phenomena," includes activities on scientific procedure, becoming a scientist, applying scientific procedure to unexplained phenomena, and experimental design. Chapter 4, "The World of Beauty," explores and defines beauty. Chapter 5, "The Fine Arts," investigates art, drama, music, and dance. Chapter 6, "Understanding World Problems," uses creative problem solving to help students understand global problems. Chapter 7, "A World for Tomorrow," allows students to explore and forecast the future. Chapter 8, "Independent Learning," helps students prepare for and facilitate independent learning through student projects. Additional resources are listed for each chapter. (KR) |
