AbstractThe information in this report was compiled from verifiable minority statistics provided by several four-year institutions. The minorities were all nonwhite students; no attempt was made to disaggregate the minority data into identifiable groups because of the small number of respondents (N=607 out of a total of 2,074). Minority graduates could be working full time, pursuing additional educational goals, or still seeking employment. An "other" category captured those graduates who were foreign students returning to their countries, individuals who were unemployed but not seeking work, and those working part time. Approximately 60 percent of those minorities who responded were employed full time; of these, 81 percent were working in Michigan. The unemployment rate, approximately 3 to 6 months after graduation, for minority graduates was 10 percent; slightly lower than the rate experienced by all graduates in 1987-88. Approximately 12 percent of the respondents were continuing their educational programs. The "other" category represented 18 percent of the respondents. No one factor provided a reason for this high percentage; part-time employment and not seeking work were most frequently cited. The average starting salary was $22,701. A table of average starting salaries and unemployment rates for minority bachelor's graduates, 1987-88, is included as well as data tables on placement results for 1987-88 minority bachelor's graduates of selected Michigan colleges and universities by curriculum areas.
