Abstract | Nineteen individuals with outstanding potential as teachers participated in an innovative alternative certification program in Colorado. The project united school districts, a major teacher training institution, and a state education agency in an intensive collaboration to develop new methods of teacher certification while maintaining traditional standards. State-of-the-art training was combined with an intensive internship experience, interaction with a network of professional educators, and access to extensive resources. The program resulted in certification of one Spanish/French, six French, and seven Spanish teachers, and retraining of five teachers. The success of the program is measured by the number of students who will be positively influenced by the quality of instruction provided by the teachers trained and certified in this program and in subsequent programs modeled on it. Fourteen tables are provided. Appendixes include publicity materials, application forms, evaluation instruments, and a three-page resource center inventory listing printed and audiovisual materials.
