Abstract | The report presents data on the prevalence of various types of disabilities among the civilian noninstitutionalized population of the United States during the period 1983-1985. The report includes data on the numbers of disabled persons who reside in the community, their sociodemographic distribution, the severity of disability, and the chronic illnesses and impairments that cause disability. Introductory information identifies highlights, explains disability concepts, and notes sources, limitations, and qualifications of the data. Tables detail the prevalence of the following: chronic conditions, activity limitation, work limitation, need for assistance in activities of daily living, work limitations and need for assistance in activities of daily living, chronic conditions causing activity limitation, chronic conditions causing work limitation, chronic conditions causing need for assistance in activities of daily living, school limitation, multiple chronic checklist conditions, multiple conditions causing activity limitation, multiple conditions causing work disability, multiple conditions causing need for assistance in activities of daily living. Appendixes provide technical notes on methods, definitions of terms, and the 1985 National Health Interview Survey Core questionnaire. (DB) |
