Abstract | This document, published by WCOTP in 1986 in observance of the 20th anniversary of the signing of the Recommendation concerning the Status of Teachers, was jointly prepared by the International Labour Organization (ILO) and the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (Unesco) and adopted by a special intergovernmental conference in 1966 convened by Unesco. The first section of the report details and defines specific points of the Recommendation, including what the Recommendation encompasses; the obligation of the ILO/Unesco Committee of Experts to periodically review the implementation of the Recommendation; the kinds of information the Committee takes into account, and the mandate and purposes of the Committee. Key paragraphs from the Recommendation are also provided. The second section presents historical and background information regarding the Recommendation. The third section presents the 13-section Recommendation, covering definitions, scope, guiding principles, educational objectives and policies, preparation for the profession, further education for teachers, employment and career, rights and responsibilities of teachers, conditions for effective teaching and learning, teachers' salaries, social security, teacher shortages, and final provisions.
