Abstract | This instructional unit designed to develop higher-level cognitive skills in fifth grade students focuses on a mid-nineteenth century newspaper from the Old Stater Print Shop. Purposes include: (1) to compare and contrast a century-old newspaper with a modern-day paper; (2) to begin planning for a newspaper and to organize a newspaper staff; (3) to be introduced to specific printer's terms; (4) to identify printing tool terms; (5) to investigate the costs of printing a newspaper; (6) to be introduced to the physical process of printing; (7) to design a newspaper schematic; (8) to produce a newspaper; (9) to see the production and to be introduced to the different positions necessary for production of a modern-day newspaper; and (10) to create invitations and prepare for a reception for administrators, parents, teachers, students, and state office holders.
