AbstractA follow-up study was conducted at Sierra College (California) to determine why students who dropped out of all of their classes during fall 1984 left the college. The dropout population included 1,549 students, of whom only 374 (27%) returned to college in spring 1985. A survey instrument was sent to all withdrawing students, requesting information on personal characteristics; educational, social, cultural, and personal goals; educational background; academic major; college choice; grade point average; course load; employment; academic, financial, and other reasons for withdrawing from college; awareness and use of college services; educational attitudes; and perceptions of Sierra College. Study findings, based on 400 usable responses and comparisons with findings from a 1981 retention study, included the following: (1) profile characteristics were the same for 1981 and 1984, with the "typical" dropout likley to be a Caucasian or Hispanic, middle-aged, married, female, taking one class for three or fewer units for avocational or recreational purposes, with no intention of transferring; (2) first-time students withdrew at a lesser rate in 1984 than in 1981; (3) 39.9% of the 1984 group withdrew in the first two and one-half weeks of the semester; (4) over half declared general studies as their major; (5) 46% of the 1984 group had attended college before; (6) 50% of the 1984 group knew of college services but did not use them; and (7) personal reasons were most frequently cited for leaving college, followed by academic and financial reasons. The survey instrument is appended. (LAL)
