| Abstract | The 1985 evaluation of the Adolescent Vocational Exploration Program (AVE) found that this New York State Department of Labor intervention and pre-employment project has been successful in increasing young people's chances of gaining employment and functioning productively in the labor market. Primarily for 14- and 15-year-olds, AVE seeks to prevent dropping out through a program of individual and small group counseling, career exploration, and role modeling by participating employers; and classroom training in pre-employment, work maturity and basic skills. Since its inception in 1980 over 10,500 adolescents in economically disadvantaged areas of the state have been served. The evaluation report includes the following: (1) an introduction describing the scope and causes of youth unemployment as well as a description of the AVE program and its goals; (2) a description of the methodology used in the evaluation; (3) a summary of the findings including the impact the AVE program had on students' gains in basic skills and pre-employment skills, student's gains in work maturity and achievement of academic credit, student and parent satisfaction, and the factors contributing to the overall program success; and (4) conclusions and recommendations. Tables and graphs provide the statistical basis for these conclusions. The roles and responsibilities of AVE staff are appended. (PS) |
