AbstractThe Student Motivation for Musical Activities in Elementary School project was conducted between 1982 and 1983 with 3 main purposes: to study problems of motivation in the classroom, to examine factors significant to student motivation for general music program activities, and to obtain empirical foundations for the development of teaching strategies for enhancing student motivation in school. Four instruments--the Self Perception Inventory, the Perceived Competence Scale, the Achievement Motives Scale, and an Interest in School Music Scale developed by the author--measured self-confidence, perceived confidence in school, interest in music activities, and achievement motivation in 381 fourth graders in 8 elementary schools in Trondheim, Norway. The results indicated that achievement motives are important factors in characterizing student groups as to self-perceptions, some aspects of self-perception were fundamental sources of achievement motivation, and several aspects of self-perception and two achievement motives contributed significantly to student interest in school music.
