AbstractInformation is provided suggesting that if humankind is to successfully save the world for itself and for nature, it must begin to educate and train individuals to confront and defeat those forces and problems which threaten the quality of the biosphere. The Proactive Action Model (PAM) was designed to enhance student involvement in global education, one possible solution to the environmental crisis, by fostering data collection, decision-making, and critical thinking skills and by making students responsible for their actions and for solutions to real life and vicarious (gaming/role playing) situations. Using PAM as a model, the Humans and Environment Learning Program (HELP) was designed to combine elements of environmental education and social studies into a continuous and sequential global studies strategy of instruction and learning by providing students with opportunities to learn subject matter and content skills, to develop critical thinking and decision-making abilities, and to apply/refine these elements of global citizenship in both real-life and hypothetical situations. Examples and a sample unit (area of study, concept, purpose, grade range, and activities list) are provided. (Author/JN)
