| Abstract | This selective review of literature related to school dropouts looks at the issue of high school dropouts, emphasizing the disproportionate number of black female dropouts. Several examples illustrate that the reasons given for dropping out vary greatly depending upon the source and that reasons given by dropouts and their parents are at variance with those of school personnel. Areas of agreement regarding reasons why students drop out are also presented, cultural deprivation being the single most-often mentioned causal factor. The literature review reveals that potential dropouts are students with high truancy rates, poor attendance and behavior patterns, and significant academic and achievement deficits, they are members of ethnic minorities, from lower socioeconomic groups, with families unable to provide resources important to academic success. Definitions of the term "dropout" are discussed, and research on the development of attitude theory and its relationship to success and failure is reviewed. (NRB) |
