AbstractThis issue of "Children in Contemporary Society" focuses on the theme of moral education for young children and addresses the following topics: the historical background of interest in and conceptualization of moral education; aspects of child development that affect the young child's judgment and conduct on moral issues; the relationship between Kohlberg's stages of moral reasoning and socialization; moral issues in children's literature; the role of conflict in moral education; environmental influences on moral development; and moral values versus societal values and the development of conscience. The issue also includes a list of children's books which could be used to foster moral development, and a special school report on the pattern of needs of families and children with handicaps and chronic conditions.
