AbstractTwo linguistic and religious aspects of the Alsatian school are discussed. These two aspects of the problem converge in the area commonly called Alsace-Lorraine. The discussion of the school question is developed in two parts: (1) the historical evolution prior to the German occupation in 1940, and (2) developments since 1940. The interlocking of the religious, political, and linguistic elements are treated in both sections of the paper. The struggle over the laicization of education, the role of the church in the organization of schools, and the question of language instruction are discussed in their historical context. Part I presents a survey of historical, political, and religious developments from the origin of the Alsatian language in the Middle Ages, through the centuries of association with both France and Germany, until the eve of World War II in 1939. The second part of the study describes the changes in attitudes that have been occurring since 1940. Particular attention is given to an analysis of the educational statute peculiar to the three departments of the region that insures religious instruction in the schools. The discussion emphasizes the religious and linguistic aspects of the problem. Several pertinent charts and maps are appended. (AMH) appended. (AMH)
