Abstract	The current situation in the field of health sciences in California is assessed and recommendations concerning modification of policies of courses of action are made. The first five chapters cover the health fields of medical, nursing, dental, pharmaceutical, and optometric education. Each chapter explores the adequacy of program size, educational opportunity in the particular specialty, special considerations in planning for the specialty, evaluative findings, utilization of clinical training sites, mid-level or auxiliary personnel, and recommendations made by the California Postsecondary Education Commission. A brief bibliography is included at the end of each chapter. The sixth chapter explores the standing of underrepresented groups (women and certain ethnic minorities) in the health professions, and current efforts to provide equal educational opportunity for these groups. The final chapter reviews the state of the art in health sciences education planning. The Commission's Resolution 6-79, "Approving a Health Sciences Education Plan for California: 1978-1980," and the text of applicable state legislation are included in the report. (PHR)
